Melanotan-2 (MT-II) is a synthetically-produced peptide designed to replicate the actions of the naturally produced hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Research on MT-II has predominantly focused on its capacity to induce melanin synthesis and promote skin pigmentation.

Human clinical trials have shown that Melanotan can cause sunless tanning. It has been suggested that this research chemical can be safely combined with UVB light therapy or sunlight. MT 1 also appears to act synergistically in the tanning response to light. [R]

Melanocytes, abbreviated from melanocortin receptors, are specialized cells found in the skin and eyes. There are five types of these receptors (MC1R, MC2R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R). Melanocytes play crucial roles in governing sexual function, skin pigmentation, and inflammatory responses. Additionally, they are believed to wield significant influence over appetite regulation. 

Melanotan resembles a naturally occurring substance in our bodies known as "melanocyte-stimulating hormone," which boosts the production of skin-darkening pigments. Additionally, Melanotan may have a potential role in the brain to induce penile erections. [R]
